WWI Memorial

117 Linden Trees were planted here after WWI. Each representing a dead serviceman from this town.

The town now has a population of about 2000. It was smaller then...

I can not imagine what that town went through. The ratio of dead to the population is just staggering.

I remind people of things like this whenever they harp about the "massive casualties" in Iraq.

Some years ago, travelling from Thames to Taranaki, I took a break at a little township called Eureka, about 10km east of Hamilton. The World War One memorial was a shock - so many dead from such a small place, and many with the same surname.
